Amazing Grace

Just a quick post to let you all know what’s been going on in my life this week.

My 89 year old mom is a very independent lady.    She has lived by herself since my dad passed away in 1980.   In the past few years she has had several falls at home and we always get “that call” in the middle of the night.     Thankfully, she’s never had any broken bones.     In the last year and a half, things have progressively gotten worse and we’ve had some real close calls with head injuries, ER visits, stitches, etc.     This past Friday night she fell and when my husband and I got there she had drug herself through the house trying to reach a phone to call us.   We found her halfway under her bed!   She has a life alert button but was apparently disoriented and did not buzz them first.     Then on Monday night about 1:00 a.m. we got another call.    When we got there, a dining room chair was knocked over, there was blood all down the hallway carpet, on the walls and on the door frames and she was on the floor in her office very confused.   We got her to the ER and she had to have 5 stitches in her right hand.     Her entire right side looked like she’d lost a battle with Mike Tyson!     However, x-rays revealed no broken bones.    When I got her home at 4:00 a.m. she passed out in my arms and sank to the floor.      I could go on and on but you get the picture.     We finally got her into her bed, hubby went to our house to sleep a little before going to work, one of my sisters came from out of  town to help me get her to her doctor but as things turned out, we had to call an ambulance to transport her back to the ER for admission.     Since then, they’ve run all kinds of tests, etc.     Bottom line is tomorrow she enters a 20 day rehab program and from there we will transition to an assisted living place.    She is at peace with that and ready to give up her home of over 40 years.

I say amazing grace because although this has been a very stressful week for all of us, the significant changes about to take place in her life have fallen into place very smoothly.      My mother is one of the most dedicated Christians I know.     She walks the walk and talks the talk.    I firmly believe her faithfulness in her daily walk with God  has kept her safe even though these falls could have had a very different outcome.    The people we have come in contact with, i.e. realtors, assisted living personnel, etc. have been so helpful and understanding of our situation.     Now that the time has come for her to make her move out of her home, God’s love has helped guide us to the right people to help her through this difficult time.

We’ve got a long way to go and I have had a lot of emotional ups and downs the last few days but I know like the beautiful song says:  “His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me”.

Please keep her and our family in your prayers.

It's amazing to see God's hand at work especially during difficult times like this. I don't know you personally, but just happened upon your blog many months ago. I enjoy reading all of your posts. I am deeply touched by the sweet relationship you have with your mother. I have an incredible relationship with my mom, too. I will be praying for you.

Judy,
God's grace is amazing! I am so glad your Mom is okay. I know this week has been emotionally and physically draining, but I praise God that He is working things out for you all. "His eye is on the sparrow" is one of my all time favorite songs, and my heart sighed when I saw it on your blog. I find such comfort in those words.
I am writing this from the hospital. I am staying with my mom tonight. She has stage four cancer and the battle has been so tough. We hope she can go back home tomorrow.
Moms are irreplaceable! I am so glad God has given us both wonderful Godly moms to guide us throughout our lives.
I pray your mom recovers quickly and enjoys her knew "home".
Blessings,
Traci

Judy,
So sorry to hear about your mother,I know this must be very hard for you. Watching our parents health decline and having to give up the home that they have lived in for so many years is so hard to handle. I'm glad to hear that things are going okay at this time, our Lord will be there for your family and your mom. I will be praying for you all.

Blessings,
Linda

Judy, my heart goes out to you and your precious mother, and I will remember you both in my prayers as you embark on this transition in your lives. I hope you will keep us posted on how she's doing.

Judy,
Will definitely keep your mother in our prayers, as well as the rest of the family as you all go through this transition. My husband's mom is very much like your mother, 90 and on her own. So far, so good...but we know things can change in a blink of an eye. It is very reassuring to know that God is watching over her daily, and keeping her in his safe keeping.

I will keep each of you in my prayers. I have walked that road and it is not an easy one, but one that most of us must navigate at some point nonetheless.

You are doing the right thing. My mother fell and hit hear head, had a brain bleed, was in a coma for 6 weeks and passed away. She was only 67...you are doing the right thing.

My heart is with you...

Judy, we have both a 91 yr.old and 86 yr. old mother, so I know what you mean. Thank the Lord for their faith and protection. Both still live in their homes, but the 91 yr. old is considering some changes. I hope and pray that all goes smoothly for you. Linda @Nina's Nest

Judy, you hang in there! I am so proud of you and your wonderful attitude. You are in a difficult situation and it sounds like you are handling it the best way possible. I'll be thinking about ya!

Judy,

I'll be thinking about you and your mom but it sounds as though everything is falling into place for you which is helpful. I had almost emailed you this week to get together since I was in AL but I was there Tues., Wed. and Thurs and knew those were the days you worked. Now after reading your post, I do believe there was another reason. You certainly have had your hands full but blessed to still have your momma with you.

My MIL is also 89 and we also were in the hospital with her on our visit home the end of Aug. but she is not ready to give up her farm just yet. My SILs are looking in their areas at the assisted living so they at least know where she would go if and when the time were to come.

I guess with both need prayers.

Judy,
I can certainly relate to your post. My parents so wanted not to burden us with their care. After my dad passed away a year and a half ago, my mom tried to stay alone but it didn't work out. When she got lost and was AWOL for 5 hours in her car and had to have a kind lady drive to her part of town so she could follow her back, we knew something had to give. She's been staying with my sister since and the house is sitting empty. Someone is going to break in and steal everything of value. No one wants to push her to sell but that's what is in her best interest. I'll say some prayers that your mom transitions easily.

Such a hard thing to deal with. My family has gone through the same this year. My grandma fell in January and it was a day and a half before anyone found her. She now lives in assisted living.

I'll keep you and my family in my thoughts and prayers.

What an amazing daughter your mother has. My husband and I were lucky enough to care for my mom in our home and I wouldn't trade the time we had with her for anything. No matter how difficult and stressful things get, just remember to take a deep breath, give your mom a hug, tell her you love her and ask God for strength to carry you and your family through this challenging time. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Hugs,

Zoe

Judy, I certainly understand what you are going through. I went through it both with my Mom and Dad. They had to move from the town they had lived all their lives and it was very difficult. But the Lord is always there...just call on Him. i couldn't have made it without His intervening and divine help!

Blessings!

Hi Judy...I'll keep your mother and you, in my thoughts and prayers as you move through this transition.
My sister and I went through this with mother. Her move to assisted living came after over medication! Very scary time. Mother moved into that next stage of her life, very well. She found old friends, at her new home. Including a former pastor. It was a huge change, for my very independent mother, but she was happy.

All the best!

Oh goodness gracious...I'm so sad just reading this. My mama is 86, and two years ago she sold her house and moved in with my brother. I'm glad she did it when she could still get around good. I feel for you so much, 'cuz your mama sounds like such a fine Christian lady, just like my mama! Bless her heart! I will certainly be thinking of you and your family during this time...soooo hard, I can only imagine!
