Recently while cleaning out my closet for installation of our new carpet, I “found” the old toy chest my kids used 25+ years ago. Once I got it emptied, I didn’t want to get rid of it, mainly for sentimental reasons. Then it hit me that it would be the perfect toy chest for my grandson Jackson’s room. Taking my cue from a toy chest featured in a PB kids catalog, I shamelessly copied it. The toy chest is a little roughed up but I think that adds to its character and it will certainly get dinged up when Jackson throws his toys and trucks in it.
So here’s what the PB toy chest looks like….
…and it costs $199.00 plus S&H!
I spoil my grandkids but I’m really not into spending over $200 on a toy chest!
So I got out some stencils and red craft paint and in just a few minutes I had my own version of the PB toy chest…
Had to do a little gluing and clamping of one of the boards that had come off.
I cut out each letter of his name and taped them down, spacing evenly. This was a quick and easy project and will come in real handy for Jackson’s room.
Then in a few years when Jackson outgrows it, I’ll stain over “Jackson” and stencil “Cade” on it, so both of my grandsons will get to use the toy chest that belonged to their parents. Pretty neat, huh? I thought so, too!
Looks like my glue didn’t dry clear. Any ideas on how to get this glue residue off? My husband said try using something like Goop Off.
We’re off to the gulf area again for a couple of days then SEC football starts Saturday. W-A-A-A-R EAGLE!
I love the toy chest. I especially love when children get to use something passed down to them that was used by a family member. Goop off might work. You might also need to use a small razor blade to get off the chunks...you can always touch up the stain. I hate when that happens!
ReplyDeleteYour version turned out great! I love it. And I know Jackson will enjoy it. I would not have spent $200 either. Love & blessings from NC!
ReplyDeleteHi Judy,
ReplyDeleteI think your toy chest is so much better than the PB one. It has two things going for it, it was Jackson's daddy's and it has a touch of grandma's love.
Wish I was going with you to the coast, I can't seem to get enough.
Oh yeah....ROLLLLL TIDE!!!!
Can we still be friends?

Judy, I like yours much better than Pottery Barn's ... and the fact that it was used by your children makes it even more special. I know Jackson loves it.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your trip to the Coast ... the weather should be beautiful.
Oops ... I almost forgot! Geaux TIGERS! :)
I am nowhere near as crafty as you! But I feel we have to be kindred spirits - WAR EAGLE!!!! Cannot wait until Saturday night!
ReplyDeleteSaw you on Coastal Charm...drawn to you for your "War Eagle".
ReplyDeleteMy household is also filled with HUGE AU fans...husband and son are AU grads, DIL and future DIL have become fans, too (Part of the requirements to join this family ;-))
Love the chest you created. I have copied the idea for my future grands...
Jane (artfully graced)
What a good idea! Love it.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Kat
This is precious! We love it! Goo-gone works wonders!

Pottery Barn's prices are ridiculous on a lot of things. Your toy box looks just as good if not better. Happy early birthday to you and thanks for my birthday wish. Congrats on the new grandson. He is a nice big boy. We are expecting our third granddaughter the end of October.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes to you tomorrow, Judy, for a very happy birthday filled with fun and lots of hugs from your beautiful family.
ReplyDeleteThat is great, just as good (or probably better!) than PB's. I hope you'll enter it in the Copycat Challenge that I'm hosting, there's lots of great prizes :). You can go to sewmuchado.blogspot.com for all the details!
