Bittersweet Days

The dictionary defines the word “bittersweet” as ‘pleasant and painful or regretful.’    That would describe the feelings I’m having right now and that’s because my precious little twin grandchildren will be starting kindergarten on August 10th!     It seems like just a short time ago they entered this world on May 21, 2004 and now they are going to “big school” and will be “after schoolers” (according to Taylor).        How can it be that it seems like just yesterday their mama went to school?

Of course, Mi Mi and Pop had to have one last special time with each of them before school starts.    Last Thursday night began Taylor’s time, then this coming Monday will be little man’s turn.

Thursday evening we met up with my daughter’s family at a Mexican restaurant….Taylor loves burritos and cheese dip!     She didn’t  hesitate one little bit leaving with us….but I thought her mama and daddy would never stop kissing her and telling her bye so we could get started on our way home!    We stopped at the grocery store to pick up something for her breakfast and of course a “surprise” before going to bed.      She picked strawberry ice cream – her favorite.

Here’s a little picture I snapped of her once we got home….

Next morning she was up bright and early with Pop before he left for work….about 5:45 a.m.!      I tried to talk her into going back to sleep but she was too excited to get the day started.    She knew we had to take my mom to the beauty shop, then lunch, then the shopping was going to start!

By 8:00 a.m. we had eaten breakfast, rode her bike up and down the sidewalk, discussed which outfit she wanted to wear (she brought 3), and got her toenails and fingernails painted!    She just had to wear the little ankle bracelet I brought her from the beach!

And she had to wear 3 ribbons in her hair!

David took off 1/2 day to come shopping with us (he never does that for me!) so we went to the mall in search of a ring….went to Claire’s a got her a box set (cheap cause they’ll be lost in a few days).     Then she rode the merry-go-round, got a cookie and drink, and generally lead us around like little puppies!      We also looked for her a pair of school shoes but couldn’t find the ones her mom wants her to have so we’ll have to order them.     We finally left to pick up her twin brother at day care and kept both of them while their mama and daddy met some friends for dinner and drinks.

On Monday I’ll have Jackson for the day.    He’s a little easier to please than Taylor….give the boy some trucks, put in a Sponge Bob video and he’s good to go!    I plan on taking him for pizza for lunch then play at the Burger King playground.         He will take a nap (unlike his sister) so I might get some things done while he’s sleeping.

On August 10th I will be going with my daughter to drop off the twins for their first day at “big school”…..I wonder which one of us will cry the most?

  1. What a good grandma you are Judy, these will be the times the twins will always remember as they get older.

  2. I can't tell you how much your post made me smile. My favorite childhood memories are of the time spent with my grandparents. Each moment was special and each memory is now priceless.

  3. Oh, what a sweet post. I, too, have my twin grandgirls here with me until next Sunday evening. I'll be WORN OUT by then! Their mom, my D-I-L, is doing a week of Air National Guard duty and my son is working nights, so he can't watch them. My girls are almost exactly a year younger (DOB 5/19/05) but they will be starting preschool this month as well. Their school system has a parish-wide 4 year-old program. Enjoy those babies while you can!

  4. My little guy was born on the SAME DAY! 12:30pm. I completely understand the bittersweet thing...he's my baby of five, and in a few weeks it will be the first time since I've been a stay at home mom that between the hours of 8 am and 3pm the house will be empty. I feel like celebrating that I've made it this far, and cry that it came so much faster than I thought...

  5. You are making me sad already. We had out oldest granddaughter (5) for a few days before school starts. We painted finger & toe nails, too, ate pizza, shopped, baked, painted, etc. Our twin grandies will be 4 in Dec., so we still have a little more time. Our other grown child has a little boy named Jackson, too! Don't you love making memories?! Linda

  6. We are a military family, separated from both Grandma's and having lost both grandfather's young, my heart aches a little reading this for my own girls but I am glad it was a wonderful time and there are more coming fast now!

  7. This is so precious! I loved it! My grandparents didn't live near me, so I didn't get these wonderful memories. Your grandchilren are so lucky!

The first day of school for my youngest was so hard for me! After I took him in (I put on a brave front) I all but ran back to the car and just put my head on the steering wheel and sobbed! They are 19 and 17 now, and I wish they were 2 again!

    Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy them!!

  9. Yes, the time flies by...it seems just yesterday I too was dropping off my own for their 1st day of Kindergarten. Last year I dropped off each for their freshmen year, one high school, one college. I cannot believe how fast that year went. And, here I sit with one week left before another year of highschool, and two before the older leaves again for college. (((Sigh)))

  11. This post was so good for me to read as a reminder to make each day count when my daughter's twins arrive. She is expecting twins in September or October. She found out recently that they are identical. Just thinking of yours starting school helps me to remember how quickly time goes. Taylor is adorable! I bet you are a special grandma to the two of them. Thanks for sharing this story.

  15. I know exactly how you feel. I get so sad when school begins. I am a first grade teacher and I am always amazed how parents are so eager for school to begin again. While I hate the fact that I'm not going to be with my 2nd grader and kindergartener all day! Hope you and your daughter don't cry too much. Blessings, Jenni Carver
