Here’s some pics of the french door in my kitchen leading into my laundry room. I’ve been debating on whether or not to paint it black. Same goes for the lower cabinets….should I paint them black or leave them? Still haven’t added the “bun feet”…what’s on there now are some I’m trying out (and not too happy with I might add). So fellow bloggers, I’d love to know what you think…..should I paint the french door or not? Should I paint the lower cabinets black or leave creamy white? Should I paint the door and not the cabs or paint the cabs and not the door? Or just leave well enough alone?
Your opinion will be appreciated!
I think the door black, cabinets white.
ReplyDeleteI think the door would look good black and leave the cabinets white.
ReplyDeleteI would paint the door black. Still thinking about the cabinets.
ReplyDeleteI think I would like to try the door black, sit on it a week or so then decide. Love the black appliances and wouldn't want them to 'disappear' if the cabinets were black too...if that makes sense?
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess I am different than everyone else. I would leave the door white and paint the cabinets black. I think that way the appliances wouldn't be the center of attention, just the beautiful cabinets. Can't wait to see what you do. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteI would paint the door black, but leave the cabinets creamy white. You could always paint cabinets black later, but I think it will look wonderful w/just painting the door.
ReplyDeleteI love black, but wouldn't paint the door or the cabinets. However, I would suggest covering the glass panels on the laundry room door with "frosted" vinyl you can purchase at Lowe's or Home Depot - used to make bathroom windows private, yet still allow the light to filter through.
ReplyDeleteI'd also suggest you paint the wall under the chair rail the same white as the trim/door. That will "beef up" the appearance of the door, and help it to blend better with the cabinets. Alternately, you could add that nice bead board wall paper to that section, instead of painting it.
ReplyDeleteI'm for leaving both the way they are. They're classic. Not contrived.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog!
I think the black would be striking for the door and the cabinets. You have such great taste that no matter what you do it will be beautiful.
ReplyDeleteZoe
I like the idea of not painting the door or the cabinets, but painting below the chair rail white. Sally
ReplyDeleteI think you should go for it!!!! and paint the door and the cabinets. If you don't like you can always change it.
ReplyDeleteI think I would paint the door black. Or at least I would take some of that oil rubbed bronze spray paint and spray the doorknob. Im building a new house and considering painting my cabs black. I think it would be really pretty if the door had some contrast...like maybe distressed wood..
ReplyDeleteI love your blog!
Oh, one more comment (you're gonna get sick of me). I read your post about the crown moulding you had installed. You can make it look more substantial by adding a small trim piece, several inches lower, then paint the wall area in between the same trim color. I just posted a photo of mine so you can see what I mean.

I'd leave them both the way they are.
ReplyDeleteI would leave them both the way they are. It looks great!
ReplyDeletePaint it, Paint it, Paint it! I LOVE painted furniture. Esp black. Can't wait to see what you decide.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought is leave it, but I can't decide. This little voice inside my head is saying don't forget about eventual resale and some people would be really turned off by black.
ReplyDeleteWhatever you decide, I know that you will wear it well:)
Hmmm....I think my vote is leave the cabinets white but paint the door. Is there another color on the table for the door or only black? If you have another accent color in the room, the french door could be done with that to stand out more as well. Have fun deciding! I still can't decide if I'm going to paint my french doors or leave them stained wood.

Ha!!! Yes, we must be decorating soul sistas!!! :).
ReplyDeleteDefinitely yes, I certainly do think painting or putting up the beadboard wallpaper on that wall would look sharp! It's a much smaller project than painting the door and bottom cabinets too (aka easier to change if you don't like the way it turns out). I love the black accents you have in your kitchen, but I think a black door would be a bit too much black. Honestly, I could go either way on the bottom cabinets, black would blend nicely with your appliances, but but white is so clean and crisp - good if you ever think about resale.
Wow, I would never guess your house was 25 years old... you've done a fabulous job keeping it current!
ReplyDeleteRE the beadboard wallpaper: Our house is 4 years old... the kitchen backslash is bare wall, painted to match the rest of the house (with lots of spots from cooking). For 4 years I tossed around one idea after another about how to improve upon the bare backsplash - I thought about tile for a while, but I HATE grout so I finally decided beadboard was the answer and told my brother that I had a job for him the next time he came for a visit.
Well, then I saw Rhoda's post about the beadboard wallpaper and I instantly knew that was the answer I had been looking for all along (and it's something I can do myself!). I need to measure my kitchen to see how many rolls I need to order - I can't wait. If it turns out well, I'll put it in the guest room and bath too! Now, if I could only remember what blog I saw someone painting the grout on a tile floor - any ideas? Oh, and I need to finish up my new pantry as well.... having some trouble finding the right shelving - decisions, decisions :).
I would paint the door black, leaving the trim white. My brother did this in his new home on all doors and it looks fabulous. I would leave the cabinets white, showing off your beautiful hardware and appliances. Painting the door black will create a beautiful focal point. I'm sure whatever you choose, it will look fabulous!
ReplyDeleteHi Judy, I just love your blog. I would paint the door black. I love black doors. All the doors in my home are painted black. Looks very rich. Linda
ReplyDeleteI'm leaning toward painting the door black and leaving the cabinets creamy white. I think the door would be very striking black.
ReplyDeleteI read a post you wrote recently about not liking some small crown molding in one of your rooms. It made me think about a beautiful room I saw on a home tour where they used a "trick" to make the crown molding look bigger. It's super easy, and I thought you might want to see it. It's my newest post.
Blessings,
Traci
My vote:
ReplyDeletedoor - black
cabinets - leave alone (since your appliances are black)
Hugs!
Kat
Like so many other posters, I would paint the door black (that is such a striking look!) and leave the cabinets as they are. Good luck deciding!! Janell
ReplyDeleteI would leave them both white....anxious to see what you decide.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth
I think painting the door black isnt going to look right with all the other white moulding. I do like black cabinets though. Print this picture you posted on paper so you can color the door and cabinets with a black marker to get a good look.
ReplyDeleteHey Judy...good morning.
ReplyDeleteBefore you even said what color you wanted to paint the door I was thinking black, so go for it girl. As for the cabinets, wait until you paint the door and then see what you think or better yet, post a picture and ask us bloggers again.
Cheri
Judy,
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would paint the door but I would paint the bottom cabinets black.
My kitchen cabinets are white and I've been thinking about painting my lower cabinets black too. You go first! (haha)

What a scream - I didn't realize I had read about that grout paint on YOUR blog!!! This is eerie!
ReplyDeleteSo how has it held up since you completed the project? Has it required any special care or maintenance?
I have exactly the same problem with my grout - the tile guy didn't seal it and I didn't know - several years later, it looks horrible.
I think you kitchen is adorable as is- but I know how we all love change- I just painted some cab. black so I'm pointed that way a little. It's just paint right?
ReplyDeleteLove your blog.
I would paint the door black and leave the cabinets white...for now. Just "study" them. I am afraid the cabinets and the appliances may "blend" into each other.
ReplyDeleteI love your home anyway and can't wait to see what you do!!
Lou Cinda :)
I love them just the way they are and would leave them like that. Just my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI'd leave both the door and cabinets the way they are...only because you have alot of black accents in there already. I'm a lover of black but I think it might be to overpowering.
ReplyDeleteJudy,
ReplyDeleteI really love the direction you are taking with your home. Its all coming together beautifully. If it were me I would probably paint the door black and then decide. Another thought...first why dont you paint a bunch of poster boards black and tape them over your lower cabs and see if that would be too much and go from there.
I have been debating all morning whether to paint my walls soft gray or go with something like the Latte color.
I know it will be pretty whatever you decide:)

I skimmed through the comments, and the the ideas I like best are: 1. leave the door white and
ReplyDelete2. paint below chair rail white
OR
3. Paint bottom cabinets black (I don't feel that appliances need to stand out - I like for them to blend). You can decide about the door later.
That's my 2 cents! Can't wait to see what you decide to do. Linda
Without reading all the other opinions, here's mine: I'd paint the door only & leave the cabinets alone. I think there will be a rush in the not too distant future to repaint many black cabinets that are showing up in kitchens. I just don't think they will last for the long haul.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of painting the door, but then where do you stop? Will you paint the molding, too?
ReplyDeleteI think the cabs would look very cool with a distressed black thing going on, but it will be a much heavier feel in there and not really knowing how much light and space there is overall, I'm hesitant.
My input is=Leave the molding white, paint the door black, leave the area below the molding the color that it is. Think of the appliances and the door as accessories- let them stand out against the crisp white of the moldings and the cabinetry. :-) Sue
ReplyDeleteI just read your post, and then I proceeded to read all of your comments and I smiled to myself, thinking it sure will be interesting to see what you decide with so many talented opinions. Whatever you decide, I know I will like it.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love the look of black cabinets, if I were doing this, I'd leave the cabinets white and do the door in black, leaving the trim white.
ReplyDeleteI had to think a long time before doing our island in black, but it's more like a piece of furniture, in my view, rather than a cabinet.
I do like the idea of a black door. I've been thinking about painting the door in the kitchen. I don't know what color, yet. J hasn't heard about that little plan...:-).
I actually like everything just the way they are-door white and cabinets white. It is a nice contrast to the wall color. Just my opinion though!
ReplyDeleteleave both white!
ReplyDeleteI would paint the door black for sure but would leave the cabinets alone....I can['t wait to see what most thought, I am going back to read now....
ReplyDeleteGood luck,
Kathy :)
Before I read all the comments and second guess myself, I'll tell you my gut instinct.
ReplyDeleteLeave the door white. White door with the black contrast frames stands out. And there's something so tranquil about the sound of French white doors, no?
I'm debating the cabinetry. I think black is an incredibly challenging color to get right. Finding the right shade and paint tone is so hard! Nothing too matte. Nothing too formica-ish. Maybe, if you really must, do the top drawers and see if you can live with it.
Personally, the black to me is such an 80's throwback, but in some corners, that seems to be reviving itself. I think I'd stick with the white and leave the black frame accessories only.
S
I would paint the door ~or~ the cabinets not both. What about an accent color for the door like a buttery yellow or robin's egg blue...
ReplyDeleteI'd leave them as is, but then I'm not that brave! Remember I haven't moved my furniture in 14 years and my walls are all ivory!!!! But I do love French doors to be white. Anxious to see what you do.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think a black door here would be a nice balance along that wall.
